I’ll disclaim this (only for myself), refined white sugar is horrible for you. Same with those chemicals in diet soda. So personally while it may be true that it contains liquid which hydrates you, and the since I couldn’t find the technical data behind it to show the trade offs, I’ll still maintain that soda is a horrible replacement for water.

I’m gonna get a little gross here and speak of urine. This will also show how bad I am at taking care of my self too…

Since I tend to drink soda all day, I have a bit of experience in this. Urine is a window into your dehydration. If it’s darker that means there’s more urea in it (Mercedes Benz has developed a urea injected diesel motor, there’s urea in fertilizers too - granted it’s all Bull urea but still…), less water, dehydration.

It’s generally considered a good thing to have very light colored urine, which says you are more hydrated. Just recently I switched off regular soda to diet soda and have noticed something. My pee went from darker (and I’d pee like 2 times all day) to a lot lighter and I’m peeing more often. It’s not as much as if it drank water, but it’s still more then drinking regular soda.

What does it mean? That neither are good for you. Don’t listen to me and think well diet soda is better, diet probably leeches calcium at a faster rate then regular. But I’m neither a medical professional or someone who documents my pee patterns closely. It’s just an observation.

Drink water more then anything else!

I’m still laughing…Jory and I discuss the color of our pee all the time. I won’t gross you out and go further, but I just wanted to note that if you have a hard time drinking more water aka kicking the soda habit, try Sam’s flavored water (found at walmart for like $0.50 a liter) it’s super delicious and fulfills my need for soda. We are currently trying to kick Mt. Dew, my personal heroin. Of course I say this while my liter of Mt. Dew on my desk laughs at my weakness.

Like Joey said - drink water that’s flavored.
You can flavor your water yourself too.
    Or drink cold tea ;)

Also, one of the most dehydrating characteristics of soda is that it is a diuretic.

Well that’s what I had thought too, but according to all the new reports is not much more then water…

Caffeine has been repeatedly proven to be a diuretic. These “new reports” could easily be faked by the soda industry.

Well I don’t know about faked, but I do know science tends to change every so often. This point in time, it’s not considered one (do a search and look for anything as current as 2006 and newer).

But don’t get me wrong, I don’t believe everything I read, I was just merely pointing out that this is what the current reports are stating.

I have a hard time buying that soda is not dehydrating. Any soda with caffeine is going to remove water from your system as that is what caffeine does among other things. Still though I think the larger dangers are from the calcium robbing carbonic acids.

Maybe diet is better for hydration while regular is better for you health wise…
