It’s no secret that I’m quite white and nerdy. I do nerdy things, I know nerdy things, I am nerdy!
Well the other day I noticed some issues with the home internet. My wife said she had been experiencing some issues too.
I didn’t have time to mess with it before I went to bed, but I woke up and found I was still having trouble, and I almost made myself late for work because I started fiddling with it.
As any nerd my know, once you engross yourself into something you could space off hours real quick, luckily I still didn’t have my pants on, so when our cat rubbed against my leg my concentration broke.
I decided I would deal with later, I suspected a DNS issue and figured I’d work on it from work. Then that wasn’t working either.
I actually contacted Comcast (online chat - I can’t bare to speak to anyone, last time it was a cross between a Jamacian and an Indian aptly named Dan), and explained my problem. Their first response was that I had spyware or a virus, but I quickly pointed out both my computers were having the trouble and one had just been formatted recently.
He understand and gave me a pretty vague - “It might be a problem on either my end or his end”.
Really? I won’t get on his [Andre] case though, he helped as much as he could even if I kind of was responsible for the problem.
So while I have him online, I call my wife to help me out. I ask her to take the router out of the loop and plug the computer directly to the cable modem. She had a little trouble finding the network jack on back - but again, more my problem - my motherboard has double network jacks and she found the empty one real easy. But she got it and I had her reboot the modem.
Sure that was the problem, stupid cable modem that I haven’t rebooted in a year or more. But I figured I better do a complete reboot on everything and had her shut down the computer turn off the router and modem and then had her reboot them all in 15 second increments (modem -> router -> computer). She logged in and said everything was working great. So I tried logging in from home and of course it didn’t work. It occurred to me that my Ip address had probably changed (I’m lazy about hard setting it) and I walked her right through resetting all the port forwarding settings in the router.
Can you believe the awesomeness of my wife?
