Finally Finished - the concrete that almost wasn’t

Date May 28, 2008

Yes, I’m behind - way behind. I really didn’t want to post anything till we got that stupid driveway finished. Then I got busy in other projects and never got around to dumping the camera. But here we are, a post to conclude the concrete project!

The weather had been pretty wet all week, with the weekend looking like it was going to be pretty bad too. But the concrete had been scheduled, and we weren’t going to get it done, and since the weather looked pretty bad everyone was canceling their appointments for concrete. Is that a bad sign or what?

Gravels and heat strokeBut let’s recap a little, a few weeks ago I had gotten it framed in. There were a few issues, but we worked it out. Then we had the gravel delivered and I set about smoothing it out. It also happened to be like one of the hottest days of the year (not last Saturday, but the one before) and I just about fell over in a gooey pile of nastiness. But I recovered and got it all fixed up.

Is that a spare computer?

Date May 21, 2008

After my last harddrive purchase I explained to my wife how much space I would have (note to self, don’t do that again), she asked “Does that mean you have enough room for the kids games, so we can get rid of their computer?”.

Of course I answer too quick for my own good “Oh yeah sure”. What was I thinking? They might infect it with thier harsh treatment of shutting down improperly, constantly reinstalling programs, and of course they’re DOS based games! But it was too late, I had said yes, and if it weren’t for my oldest I’d be sunk.

He spoke up (I think he suffers the same quick to comment problem I have) and said “We barely even use it anymore, so we don’t need to use your computer dad”.

Sweet, totally off the hook and I have a spare computer to boot!

So what to do, what to do?

Simple javascript mouseover tooltip

Date May 16, 2008

So I wanted something simple, easy that could handle the information that explains what these options mean. There’s so many way to handle this, and some are more powerful (see if you can find the rickroll), and other aren’t, using the title=”" attribute in a link. The one I’ve done is closer to the simple, but allows for a little more control and looks a lot better!

So I have a form with a number of checkboxes and radio buttons. There’s a lot of stuff going on there, like 23 or more. I can’t remember all them, and so when people ask me what this one does, or that one controls I have to dig through some code to remember what they are for (yes I can guess, but I’m too lazy for any of it).

So what I did was add a little famfamfam silk ‘help’ icon next to each one, and gave it a mouseover event to show a tool tip.

To the point

It’s rather cute when my little girl gets up when I’m still home, she’ll yell “Daddy, Daddy - I’m up, I want out”. So I’ll go get her and bring her into my room so she can lay next to her mommy. This morning, she woke up and I went and got her, she wanted a kiss before I left and after that I was getting my vest on, and giving her funny looks.

She said “Daddy, I want to goto sleep please” meaning, “I’m done with you, get out you’re keeping me awake”. You gotta love her though, she’s a cutey!

It’s framed - almost

Date May 12, 2008

It’s Saturday again (well as I sit and write this it’s past Saturday), and what did we find ourselves doing? That’s right, if you’re any sort of regular here - you know it’s just another work day (I’ll fight liking it till I die I think).

This Satuday, I was tasked with framing in the cement pad - no biggie, I’ve done it before (and I would have linked to a post about it, if I hadn’t lost everything earlier this year).

My father in law dropped off some 2×4s and metal stakes to set it up. So I started getting everything in place by measuring 20ft from the sidewalk - marking it and then measured from the drive way 8ft.

Who wins - Sylvester Stallone vs David Carradine

Date May 9, 2008

It seems like a simple question right? Well go rent a copy of Death Race 2000 and find out.

In this corner wearing pink shorts, with a slightly stroked out left side weighing in at a hefty 13 stones (sounds cool huh, I don’t really know his weight, but 13 stones comes out to be like ~175lbs).

He looks pretty tough over there in his matching pin stripped helmet/sport coat huh?

Look at the intensity on his face, he’s driving to win, and taking no names, he’ll even stoop to strangling a girl to win.

Now that doesn’t sound like the lovable Rambo we’ve all come to know now does it?

In the other corner wearing black shorts, tall and lanky weighing in at a slimmish 11 stones.

Bring out the gimp” comes to mind as he looks at you through his black vinyl sout, and black rubber mask.

Is that lemon in your soup?

I grew up learning to cook from my mom. One of those guys who could cook better then most of the girls I’ve ever known (in fact a lot couldn’t even boil water…lol).

At any rate, I love cooking - it’s one of the ways I get rid of stress. There’s been times when I thought I’d make a career out of it, one being a bad idea when I was 17 and it involved the Navy. But I figured that like all my hobbies, it I turned it into a career I’d end up hating it. So I kept it as a hobby.

What I learned from my mom is that you only use a recipe as a reference or starting point. What I mean is, if you were to ask my mom how to make something that you happened to have for dinner one day, she’d tell you “Well I didn’t write it down”. Or you could always count on the it doesn’t taste like it did last time phenomenon. But I Love my mom, and her brand of cooking - and what kind of cook it turned me into, how else would we end up with such classics as green curry cottage cheese eggs.

Saturday recap

Date May 5, 2008

As some may remember, last Saturday we started digging out a pad for a second driveway, we also were working on our fence.

Well this Saturday we worked on them some more!

My father in law brought over his little tractor and finished digging it out, compared to last week (digging by hand), this was WAY better. We only had to dig it once - by that I mean he dug it up and dumped it in his truck and we went and emptied it, instead of digging it up and then dumping it out (digging it twice).

Then we finished up the gate, got an extra 2×4 on the edge of one of the doors (did I mention we somehow ended up with some extra space?). My father in law also helped design a door stop for the left side door. It was just a tube driven in the ground, a piece of rebar held to the door so you basically pull it up and the door will swing open. Pretty neat. We also got the hardware back on the door too.

Started another book - The Talisman

Date May 5, 2008

This is one of my all time favorite books. So I thought I’d give it another whirl, it’s been since 1991 (the last time I read it).
