My technical blog - in beta form (finally)

Date April 2, 2008

So, as a personal experiment I’ve been developing a technical blog from scratch.

Well I’m happy to say it’s now into a beta stage and available to view by anyone. There’s not a lot to it, just a few entries and no way to comment (yet), but it’s working and it’s doing the job it’s been programmed thus far.

You can see here the basic form, I’ve built it from a theme developed by arsin called Beautiful Day. Everything else has been done by me. I’m pretty happy with the little calendars I built (look ma, no tables!). I’ve been struggling with trying to keep the whole thing XHTML valid, but I’m getting stuck when trying to show code inside an entry. I know the problem, and I’m working on a solution, just takes time…

I want access to all my music - from anywhere!

Date March 18, 2008

How many of you guys love music? How many have a music library at home, and don’t have enough gadgets to carry it all with you every where you go? Yeah me too. I mean sure I have a 2 gig flash drive, a phone that will play MP3’s (2 gigs), I have an Archos that will play audio and video (30 gig) but I still find myself wanting to play something I don’t have stored away on one of my devices - this presents a problem.

Well it looks like I found an answer!

I didn’t think it would have been hard to please me. I only had a few core requirements, everything else would have been icing.

1. I wanted to be able to access my music from anywhere (mainly for work, because…well that’s where I spend a majority of my time).

2. I wanted something simple.

Throwing tomatos at my wrt54gs part 1

Date February 19, 2008

You heard me right, I said tomatos! Sometime ago I had come across an article talking about 3rd party firmware running on linksys routers, and it planted a seed. Then it started to grow, and last night I seized the opportunity of a free night to start.

So I grabbed the dusty white box that housed my old Linksys WRT54GS (v1.1) router, an extra network cable and sat down at my computer to see what I could do.

I was immediately rewarded with a username and password screen that I couldn’t remember, so after hoping it was something more common and even trying the default ones, nothing. So I pressed the little red button on the back and reset it, which did the trick and allowed me to log in (192.168.1.1 blank/admin).
