The Broken Window - A Novel

Date October 24, 2008

What keeps you up at night? Is it something you’ve seen in a scary movie, or something you heard in your dark house, maybe it was that weird guy that seemed like he was following you one evening. None of that stuff gets me freaked out - I’ve grown up with scary stuff, through movies, books, real life - that you’d think it would take something pretty horrific to get me frightened.

WRONG!

It takes the subject of this book to do it - why? Because it’s more real than any horror that lurks in darks corners or under beds or even behind leathery masks. This kind of scary is real!

The specific topic I speak about is, information. How can that be scary you ask, let me take a moment and ask you a question instead.

How much do you rely on a computer in your day to day activities? How of your life is controlled by computers that you don’t even know about?

The Stand - the mini series

Date March 28, 2008

I was hoping to have timed it better, but it just didn’t work out. I know, this post is almost a week old too (well that I should have written it a week ago). But I just can’t stand it anymore.

Sometime ago I recall Stephen King saying he would rather work with TV rather then movies, in context with his stories. When I first heard that I thought “What? No way, you can’t get all the gore and stuff on TV”. I wish I could find a quote of it, but this was years ago, and before the internet took off in any way, shape or form (like early 90’s). At any rate, I still hold to what I thought back then. It just wouldn’t work, he remade The Shinning for TV and, well it rightly sucked, same with his TV version of It. I was sorely disappointed and it just added to my growing dislike for his “progression”.

I AM Legend - a review

Date February 22, 2008

I Am LegendSo, another book already. This one went by in a flash - a few trips back and forth to work and it finished right before I got home. Perfect!

Coming from Duma Key, there was a huge difference in style - granted it may have been the narrator or the speed of the book but you knew it was different right off the bat.

The story, was rather familiar to me even though I haven’t seen the movie yet. I have though seen parts of “The Last Man on Earth” and I’ve seen the complete “Omega Man“. Oh forget the classic “Homega Man“.

Listening to the story, you feel it’s dated. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s a great part of the story, and listening in general. There wasn’t an over endulgence of sex or gore it was very subdued. I think the other piece of it was the technology/terminology used with in the story dates it quite well. You may not even notice it’s dating unless you really pay attention to a couple of things like twin beds in the parents room and the use of a record player. It doesn’t matter though, it doesn’t distract from the story.
